We identified multiple novel genes and neural circuits that regulate different aspects of sleep, and are using them to ask diverse questions about sleep regulation: How does the brain quickly and reversibly switch between waking and sleep, and how does it maintain these states for hours? How are external and internal stimuli filtered during sleep to prevent arousal? How do environmental light-dark cycles influence sleep? Using Drosophila melanogaster as our model system, we are in a position to search for detailed mechanistic insights into what is arguably the most mysterious basic animal behavior.
