Olfaction is the final frontier of our senses. Unlike vision and hearing, where a relatively straightforward relationship exists between stimulus features and neural responses, the olfactory code remains unbroken. I will describe our recent attempts to understand various features of representation of smells by the olfactory system, including the definition of olfactory space, sparse odor coding in the olfactory bulb, and the models of odor identity coding in the piriform cortex.
