I will discuss our recent discoveries of neural circuits that mediate (1) the sedative effect and (2) the analgesic (pain-suppression) functions of general anesthesia, focusing on the role of a peptidergic neuroendocrine system that controls brain’s arousal state and the identification of a anesthesia-activated circuit in the amygdala that potently suppresses pain.
