DEPARTMENT OF ORGANISMIC AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY
CENTER FOR BRAIN SCIENCE
FACULTY POSITION

The Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University are seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of animal behavior, behavioral genetics, and neuroethology. We are especially interested in individuals who conduct rigorous tests of general problems in behavior using genomic and neurobiological approaches, especially as applied to non-traditional models.

As a member of the Center for Brain Science, the successful candidate will have opportunities to interact with faculty from other departments in the Faculty for Arts and Sciences and Harvard Medical School. Aims of the Center include mapping neural circuits that underlie experimentally accessible behaviors in diverse species, and elucidating the biological bases of individual differences in behavior. The Center fosters interactions across disciplinary boundaries. Faculty from several academic departments are housed in common research space, contiguous with that of the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology.

Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in both research and teaching. Teaching opportunities will include offerings at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Applications from, or nominations of, women and minority candidates are encouraged. Questions regarding the position can be addressed to Joshua R. Sanes, Center for Brain Science, Harvard University, 52 Oxford St., Cambridge, MA 02138 (sanesj@mcb.harvard.edu) or Naomi E. Pierce, Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, 26 Oxford St., Cambridge, MA 02138 (npierce@oeb.harvard.edu).

To apply, please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and statements of research and teaching interests, and arrange for submission of 3 letters of recommendation. Application materials should be emailed to: cbs@fas.harvard.edu.  Review of applications and nominations will begin December 1, 2008.

CENTER FOR BRAIN SCIENCE
FACULTY POSITION

The Center for Brain Science is seeking an Assistant Professor in the area of animal behavioral genetics and neurobiology, broadly construed. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research programs are driven by behavioral and psychological questions, and who explore neural and genetic mechanisms using innovative techniques. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, spatial knowledge and navigation, decision- making, social relationships, and psychopathology. Successful candidates will hold an academic appointment in a participating department, such as Psychology or Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Harvard University has created the Center for Brain Science to bring together scientists involved in research on systems neuroscience.  Our aims include mapping neural circuits that underlie experimentally accessible behaviors in diverse species, and elucidating the biological bases of individual differences in behavior. CBS fosters interactions across disciplinary boundaries: faculty from several academic departments will be housed in common research space, and its connections reach out across the University.

Candidates should have demonstrated a promise of excellence in both research and teaching. Teaching duties will include offerings at both undergraduate and graduate levels.  Applications are due by 1 December 2008. Applications from, or nominations of, women and minority candidates are encouraged. Harvard is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer.

Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and 2 to 4 page research plan, and arrange for submission of 3 letters of recommendation.  Application materials can be submitted electronically by emailing cbs@fas.harvard.edu, or by sending mail to: Joshua R. Sanes, Center for Brain Science Search Committee, Harvard University, 52 Oxford St., Cambridge, MA   02138

Postdoctoral Research Positions

Ölveczky lab - The Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, The Center for Brain Science, Harvard University

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Dr. Bence Ölveczky's lab in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University. Research in our lab focuses on the principles and mechanisms used by neural circuits to generate complex, learned behaviors. We are predominantly using the songbird as our model system, but have recently started to explore the neural underpinnings of complex motor learning in rodents. Given the interdisciplinary work in the lab, qualified candidates from a variety of backgrounds (neuroscience, biology, mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering) are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have obtained a PH.D. or an equivalent degree at the time of employment. The position can start right away. Interested applicants should email Dr. Bence Ölveczky a curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of research experience, a one-page summary of future research interests directly to Dr. Bence Ölveczky via email at olveczky@fas.harvard.edu.

Zhang lab - The Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, The Center for Brain Science, Harvard University
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Dr. Yun Zhang’s lab in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and the Center for Brain Science at Harvard University.  Research will focus on function of neural circuits and regulation of behaviors.

Strong background in molecular biology, genetics, quantitative analyses and biophysics are preferred.  Qualified applicants should have obtained a PH.D. or an equivalent degree at the time of employment.  The position can start right away.

Interested applicants should email Dr. Yun Zhang a curriculum vitae, a one-page summary of research experience, a one-page summary of future research interests and arrange three letters of recommendation sent directly to Dr. Yun Zhang via email at yzhang@oeb.harvard.edu.
