Grants
Some foundations grant awards based on open competition. Others limit the number of applications per institution, so the first stage is an internal Harvard competition, either within each Harvard school or University-wide. Many of these competitions go through the Univerisity Committee on Biological Sciences (UCBS). Every year, there are two UCBS competitions to select nominees -- spring and fall. The application deadline for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Research Fellowship Opportunities is October 14, 2008 (current Faculty Fellowships). For other University-wide competitions, internal deadlines are set by Michael McElman to be about six to eight weeks earlier than the foundations' deadlines. You may find additional resources here.
