Smith Family New Investigator Awards Program

   FAS Applications due July 2, 2007
   Smith Family deadline is September 6, 2007

  • Supports promising young scientists engaged in basic research in the areas of AIDS, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neuroscience; neuroscience research must have relevance to the prevention or treatment of severe neurologic disorders.
  • Full-time independent investigators who are within two years of their first independent faculty appointment by July 1st of the current grant cycle.
  • Candidates must be working in Massachusetts academic or research institutions.
  • Updated guidelines will be available in June 2007.
  • Annual award of $100,000 for two years, totaling $200,000.

   Submission Procedures:

  • FAS: Submit via email to drg@fas.harvard.edu. (One email should contain all application packets attached as separate PDF files)
  • Include a summary of proposed research not to exceed two pages, a curriculum vitae (current to 7/1/07) plus bibliography, and a letter of support from the department chair or center director.
  • The subject of the email should read: Smith Family application for (Candidate's Name)
  • Letters in emailed application packets do not require scanned signatures; signatures on hard copy will be sufficient

Sloan Research Fellowships

  Internal Applications: N/A
  Sloan Research Fellowship deadline is September 15, 2007

  • Candidates are nominated by department heads or other senior researchers. More than one candidate from a department may be nominated, but the Foundation recommends no more than three. Direct applications are not accepted.
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, economics, neuroscience, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, or in a related interdisciplinary field.
  • Must be a faculty on a tenure track at a college or university in the United States or Canada. Candidates are normally below the rank of associate professor and do not hold tenure, but these are not strict requirements.
  • They may be no more than six years from completion of the most recent Ph.D. or equivalent as of the year of their nomination, unless special circumstances such as military service, a change of field, or child rearing are involved or unless they have held a faculty appointment for less than two years.
  • While Fellows are expected to be at an early stage of their research careers, there should be strong evidence of independent research accomplishments.
  • The Foundation welcomes nominations of all candidates who meet the traditional high standards of this program, and strongly encourages the participation of women and members of underrepresented minority groups.
  • The award total is $45,000, covering the the two-year period of the fellowship.
