UNIVERSITY-WIDE

Although specific awards have slightly different requirements, pre-proposal submission for the Harvard Internal Competition generally require the following:

  • Letter of support from the department chair
  • CV including bibliography and current funding sources
  • 2-3 page description of the proposed research

Internal deadlines are usually six to eight weeks before the foundations' deadlines. Please contact Michael McElman or go to the Office for Sponsored Programs website for more information on nomination procedures for specific grants.


Dana Foundation Clinical Hypothesis in Research Program in Brain and Imuno-Imaging

   Internal Applications due April 25, 2007
   The Dana Foundation deadline is Tuesday, May 22, 2007

  • Track A: Conventional systems imaging (anatomical imaging of white or gray matter in the brain, or physiological functioning, such as blood flow).
  • Track B: Cellular and molecular imaging of biochemical actions of specific brain cells, immune cells, or their interactions. (can employ systems imaging in their proposals to view the actions of cells & their locations).
  • Institutions (that have been invited by letter) may submit only one application per track. Candidates must be nominated by the dean or president.
  • Priority is for faculty researchers early in their career but senior investigators may apply if they are seeking support to embark on new research direction.
  • Established researchers (Associate professors and above, or have more than 3 grants) must specify why the study is not currently funded and demonstrate that they are focusing their research in a new direction.
  • For all proposals that do not propose to undertake studies in humans, direct relevance to human health and functioning need to be explicitly stated.
  • Previous applicants are eligible to reapply through their dean's office.
  • Track A - Brain tissue imaging studies are funded at $100,000 each, payable over three years.
    Track B - Cellular and molecular imaging of brain cells, or immune cells, or of their interactions are supported at up to $300,000 each, payable over three years.

Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation - Young Investigators Program

   Internal Applications due August 10, 2007
   The Beckman Foundation deadline is September 28, 2007

  • Candidates with tenure-track appointments in academic and non-profit institutions that conduct fundamental research in the chemical and life sciences.
  • Must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States at the time of application.
  • Should not have completed more than three full years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent research appointment.
  • Regardless of eligibility under this rule, no individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator award more than three times.
  • Projects should show promise for contributing to significant advances in the research fields of interest to the Foundation. They should represent innovative departures in research rather than extensions or expansions of existing programs. Proposed research that cuts across traditional boundaries of scientific disciplines is encouraged.
  • Interested applicants should send the following information to helia_morris@harvard.edu or mike_mcelman@harvard.edu by August 10, 2007:
        -CV including bibliography and current funding sources
        -Two page summary of proposed research (a third page may be used for references)

David and Lucile Packard Foundation Conservation and Science Program

   Internal Applications due March 2007 (Tentative)
   Packard Foundation deadline is April 17, 2007

  • Candidate must be faculty members who are eligible to serve as principal investigators.
  • Must be engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering and must be within the first three years of their faculty careers.
  • This award targets unusually creative researchers early in their careers.
  • Recipients will receive $125,000 annually for 5 years, totaling of $625,000.

Ellison Medical Foundation (New Scholar Program in Aging)

   Internal Applications due January 2008 (Tentative)
   Ellison Foundation deadline is March 1, 2008

  • New Scholar Applications are solicited by invitation only. Invitations for 2007 will be sent to the president and to the head of the sponsored research program for invited institutions in October.
  • Objective to support new investigators of outstanding promise in the basic biological sciences relevant to understanding lifespan development processes and age-related diseases and disabilities.
  • For investigators who are in the first three years of their research career following their post-doctoral fellowship experience.
  • As of March 1, 2007, nominees must hold regular full time appointments (tenure or non-tenure) on the faculty of the sponsoring institution and they must not have been in such an appointment, at the sponsoring institution or other institution(s), for more than three years as of July 15, 2007, i.e. the appointment having been made no earlier than July 15, 2004. Time spent in clinical internships, post-doctoral training, residencies, or in work toward board certification does not count as part of the three-year limit.
  • May hold one similar award from a private source concurrently for up to one year (career development or new faculty awards including, but not limited to, AFAR-Glenn Foundation/Merck Fellowships/Pfizer, Beeson Scholar, Brookdale, Hartford Foundation, Hughes Foundation, Merck/American Geriatric Society, Pew Charitable Trust, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation).
  • New Scholar Awards will only be made for the full four-year term.
  • If a conflicting award is accepted prior to the New Scholar Award, this must be resolved by either declining The Ellison Medical Foundation award or arranging to terminate the conflicting award within one year.
  • Each award will be made for up to $50,000 per year for four years, totaling $200,000. Continued funding is contingent upon submission of an acceptable progress report.
