Open Competition
Open Competition grants consist of two categories. Those organized by the federal governement, and those by private instiutions. All proposals require a review and approval by the Office of Sponsord Programs. Federal grants must be submitted to the OSP 5 business days prior to the deadline. Private grants must be submitted 3 business days prior to the sponsor deadline. Once the application is received and signed, an email will be sent out notifying the applicant that it is ready for pick-up.

NIH Director's New Innovator Award
OSP Deadline: Tuesday 15 May 2007

- Candidates must be withing 10 years of their Ph.D.
- Award provides up to $300,000 per year for up to five years in support of highly innovative research
- A connection must be made between the proposed research and the improvement of human health and wellbeing
- Selected sponsoring NIH IC's: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; National Institute of Aging; Office of AIDS Research

- Applicants must be voting members of Harvard University Faculty holding appointments of three years or more. Generally, this includes a lecturer with a 3-year appointment, Assistant Professor or above (these titles may vary among schools), or Junior Fellows of the Harvard Society of Fellows.
- Applicants having substantial active support ($200K or more not including applicant's salary and fringe benefits), which runs concurrently with the Milton Fund's award period will be assigned a very low priority rating for funding.
- Award amount is currently set at $35,000.
Esther A. & Joseph Klingenstein Fund, Inc.
Application due by December 7, 2007- Candidate must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. and have completed all research and post-doctoral training.
- The candidate should be an independent investigator, holding a tenure track academic rank (but not yet tenured) in a university or medical school, or the equivalent standing in a research institute or medical center.
- U.S. Citizenship is not a requirement, but it is expected that candidates will be permanent residents of the U.S. and that their research will be carried out in U.S. institutions.
- Holding an award from another foundation concurrently with a Klingenstein award requires the approval of the Advisory Committee.
- The award of $150,000 is payable over a three-year period, and may be used at the discretion of the awardee, but may not be used for institutional or departmental support or overhead. Fringe benefits and research assistantships may be charged to the award.
Applications must arrive no later than January 2, 2008
- Candidate must hold an M.D. or Ph.D. degree with formal postdoctoral training completed at the time of application.
- Record of meritorious research in areas pertinent to the interests of the Endowment.
- Applicants may not be employees of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute or scientists within the intramural program of the NIH.
- U.S. Citizenship or lawful permanent resident status.
- U.S. based sponsoring institution, to which awards will be paid.
- Have no more than four years of experience in an independent faculty position. Traditionally, successful candidates have held faculty positions for at least one year.
- Applicants may not apply in more than two rounds of competition.
- Applicants may not apply for continued postdoctoral support.
- Applicants may not hold tenured positions or their equivalent.
- McKnight Scholar Awards: Encourage neuroscientists in the early stages of their careers to focus on disorders of learning and memory. Currently, awards are $75,000 per year.
Applications due 17 March 2007
- Voting members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and FAS Emeriti Faculty Members.
- Funds are to be used for faculty research purposes, such as paying undergraduate and graduate students for research assistance, obtaining or duplicating documents or other research materials, traveling to research sites, or acquiring computers or other equipment needed to carry out research tasks.
- Up to $6,000 over three years.
